Is English or Japanese used at H.A.C.?

English is the common language at H.A.C. The staff members will all be using English when communicating with the children.

Can the staff speak Japanese?

The staff members who will be corresponding with parents can speak Japanese, so feel free to ask any questions. The staff members who work with the children the most will only use English.

Is there a transportation service?

For every child's safety, we ask that the guardian of the child drop off and pick up the child everyday. H.A.C. is located on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki and can be easily reached by foot or bus from major hotels and condominiums.

What kind of clothes should be worn?

Please wear clothes that are easy to move around in. Please wear shoes or sandals that are well broken in and inexpensive. Also, bring a light jacket, as buildings may be chilly from air conditioning.

Will I know the program schedule ahead of time?

The inside program activity is generally planned out monthly. The outside activity, however, will be decided on the morning of the given day depending on weather and the health of the participants on that day.

Should I pack a lunch or snack for my child?

Lunch and snacks are included in the Fun Program, so there is no need to bring your own lunch. Simply choose one of the three items on the menu while applying. For long-term participants in the main program, only a snack is provided. However, if you would like to order a lunch, please fill out and turn in the order form beforehand. You are welcome to bring your own lunch everyday.

How can I sign-up for H.A.C.?

Please apply to H.A.C. directly using this website. You may also fill out the application by hand and send it by fax. Applications for Keiki Fun will also be accepted from those who have already arrived in Hawaii. Please apply for the main program from Japan. Each program has limited space so apply early!!

What is the difference between the Hotel Kid's Programs and H.A.C.?

Kids Programs run by hotels are made with the sole purpose of taking care of children for their vacationing parents. This very basic goal is completely different than H.A.C. There are also many of these Kids Programs that use Japanese. This does not give the children an English experience, but instead ends up feeling simply like a day care service. Parents should think about what they would like their child to do while they are in Hawaii and make an appropriate decision.

Isn't it better to enroll my child in a local summer school?

In order to enroll in local schools, a certain language ability is required, especially after your child finishes kindergarten and enters the higher grades of elementary school. This makes it difficult to enter local summer schools. Some schools also require recommendations from teachers. The alternative would be a typical ESL program. It may sound easy to have a set activity program in the afternoon, but you should consider whether you would also like a study course or not.

What is the absolute latest I can apply to the program before departing from Japan?

After an application has been submitted, the administration process may take more than 1 week for completion, so please apply early. Please beware that even early applications may be rejected due to capacity limits and other limitations on special programs. *Keep in mind that because of the large volumes of e-mails we receive; replies to inquiries made before applications may also take a week or more. *As spring, summer and winter are very busy seasons, we recommend registering and inquiring as early as possible.

Is there any way to find out the Outside Activity Schedule in advance?

The Outside Activity Schedule is based on weather and daily conditions of the children along with a number of other factors, so we regrettably cannot plan this schedule ahead of time. Please note that Outside Activities may overlap on days that your child participates. Please understand that we are not always able to satisfy all Outside Activity requests.
